
Jan 31st Tues. - Cloudy and a light snow fell during the a.m. Windstorm and i cleared out the cottonwood and alder trees on the plank road up by the ill. Clear and sunshine this afternoon. Irene helped me pull over an alder log and I cut about 12 cuts. Jean stayed with Verna Marks tonight.
Jan 30, Monday- Cut about 12 blocks of wood and split it up during the afternoon. Irene baked bread and pie this afternoon. Had sunshine all morning and cloudy weather all afternoon.
Jan 29, Sunday- cloudy with showers of rain and light flurry of snow. Stayed around the house most of day. Called on Albert Potts awhile this afternoon to see him about some chickens for J.T.Bauman of Mt. Angel.
Jan 28th Sat. - Cloudy this morning: I hooked up the donkey engine and Irene helped me let out cable and we pulled over a log. Jean and I went to the mail boxes. Rained with some high winds during the afteroon.

Jan 27th Friday - Cloudy and rain most of the morning. I split up several cuts of wood this morning. Finished up my wood this afternoon and rained pretty hard, so I went in house.
Jan 26th Thursday - Cloudy all morning with a few light showers. I cut wood all morning. This afternoon I took the generator out and dressed down the mica seperators on the commentator? Also finished the log I was cutting on. Irene went to the mail boxes.
Jan 25th, Wednesday 0 Cold but clear weather all day. Heated up the hot water in the power house and Irene washed today. Split up the wood cuts. I had left and then Ireene ran the donkey engine and we pulled over another log.
Jan 24, Tuesday - Rain and fog all day. I cut up some of the wood and wheeled it in woodshed. This afternoon I called on Mr. Sear’s awhile.
Jan 23, Monday - I split up hemlock wood this morning. Nice weather all day. This afternoon I pulled over another log and made 7 or 8 cuts in it.
Jan 22 - Sunday - The American wild Life Iss Washington lecture with the martin at 9:30 am.
Rex Gordon and Mrs Sorensen and her girls and their boy friends came through here today. Dote, Pauline, Donald and Roy and Peggy to visit us today. They brought a nice supply of canned fruit potatoes, apples etc. Light mist today.
Jan 21 - Saturday- Clear weather about 24 degrees at 8 a.m. I brought down a wheel barrow load of cedar blocks from the mill. Had some trouble getting the donkey engine started. then pulled a hemlock log over with donkey. Got 16 blocks out of log for heater wood. Irene baked bread today.
Jan 20th - Friday- nice weather: I jacked up the first section of the water flume at the dam this morning. Irene and I went to Knaggs and took Martha with us to Colton. We met Joe Srauer and Bill and Carl on the way. When we came home they were at our place. I showed them around our place. Joe came up to see about 200 cedar posts.
Jan 19th Thurs. - Nice weather with sunshine checked over my saw a little and then made 5 cuts in 18 inch log this morning. Splits up 9 cuts this afternoon and haled it in the wood shed. Windstorm is busy shingling Potts border house.
Jan 18th Wed. - Cloudy all day but nice weather all day. I filed saw awhile and made 3 cuts on log. Irene attended a grange pow wow at Bates this afternoon. Mr. Bates and Mr. Johnson visited me this afternoon.
Jan 17th - Tuesday- Cloudy and some light rain during the day. I pulled an 18 foot log across the creek this afternoon and made a few cuts on it.
Jan 16, Monday - Cloudy weather: I bucked a couple of cuts through along across the creek and then got the rigging ready to pull it across the creek. Windstorm and Levie ? took Potts shingles down in Nails truck Donkey engine would not start, so I took carburetor in the bunk house and took it apart. Mr. Potts came up and borrowed the charger.
Jan 15, Sunday: Nice weather: I cut up the last two cuts of the 30” log and wheelsd it into the wood shed. Note Joyce assumes he meant that log was 30 inches across. Mr Baker of Colton ad Mr. Hinkel were here and looked over our light plant and the nails saw mill. Question by Joyce are the Nails a neighbor?
Jan 14th, Saturday - Nice weather: I wrote a letter to John beyer and also wrote Mr Koch of Newborn about road rightly. Packed idler bearing on the light plant this morning. This afternoon Irene and Jean went to the mail box. I split up wood and wheeled it in the wood shed.
Jan 13, Friday - Sunshine all day. I cut wood and finished all the but endow the big tree from across the creek . Irene cleaned up the bunk house this afternoon.
Jan 12, Thursday. - Irene’s birthday. I cut wood all day. Cloudy weather, but no rain. Windstorm and Leivie have been cutting shakes for the last two days. About 6 ladies came up to our place this afternoon and gave Irene a birthday party.
Jan 11, Wednesday - Cut wood most of the morning. Had a little fine mist for awhile this morning.
Jan 10, Tuesday - Took pulley block apart and tried to put on another part, but it would not fit. Rigged it up on tree by garage and pulled hemlock log across creek. Cut up hemlock log into wood. Pulled 3 foot log across creek this afternoon.
Jan 9 Monday - Cloudy and a light mist part of the day. Heated wash water for Irene this morning. worked on stump puller all day blocking it up and finally got the anchor cables drawer tight about 4p.m.
Jan 8, Sunday - Cloudy but no rain. I wheel 3 loads of wood from aloe the mill, also brought down a tree for the stump puller blocking. This afternoon I put on a new brush in the generator on side next to wall. Went over to see Mr. Georger Mcspon about road but no one ws home Ole Raske was in the yard. I went on up to the new mill and see the Holt brothers.
Jan 7, Saturday. - Cloudy no rain. Checked over ignition on stump puller. Moved stump puller from bridge over Spring to the wood shed today. Jean went after the mail and Irene baked cookies.
Jan 6, Friday - Cloudy and cool. I had Mr. Bates bring out the spark plugs from Stauhneckers which I had forgot when I was down there . We showed movies to the Windstorms this evening. According to paper the the Stiney (?) blew out a tumbler at the laundry today.
Jan 5th, Thursday - cool and frosty during the morning. I ground the values on the stump puller this afternoon.
Jan 4th Wednesday - Hard Rains all morning, Irene canned 18 pint jars of beef today. I stayed in house all morning. This afternoon the rain let up for about 2 hours. I cut up 4 lengths of dead alder wood, and soldered a gallon pail.
Jan 3, Tuesday - Cludy and light rains. I went to Knaggs for milk and then to Colton. Had Stalhnecker reface values of donkey engine. Bought 25 pubs of beef for $2.9 from Davidson.
Jan 2, Monday - Cloudy part of the day. I removed the values out of the donkey engine this morning. Mr. Englunds visited us a few minutes just after dinner. Mr. Pott’s visited me for a couple of hours this evening at the bunk house.
Jan 1, 1939 - Sunday Rained all day. We stayed home all day and I cut a little wood during the afternoon.
Frank used an older book from 1938 and changed or modified all the dates as he used the book for his notes from 1939. He titled it Cedar Home Ranch, Colton Oregon.
