******************    January ***********************
1 Mon Willard Hart was visiting here today. Dite, Pauline, and Earl came after Willard early and left about 1:30 pm. 
2 Got up late and Jean had to buy her lunch today.
3 Bob and I cleared a little more land today.
4 I went to Oregon City and reported at the S.U.E.C office [Unemployment office]. Rained.
5. Bob and I learned land awhile today.
6 Sat Tried to repair the fence for the goats. Also cleared some more brush.
7 Sun We stayed home and I fixed the goat fence. Jean and Bob went to Marx’s this afternoon. 
8 Mon Cloudy: Nice weather most of the day. Bob and bought boards down from mill and started ceiling in bunk house.
9 Sunshine awhile this morning. WPA men came up to our place with 2 cars today. Bob and I finished ceiling bunkhouse. Rained from about 3 pm. on.
10 Nice weather: I worked on a battery relay cut out nearly all afternoon and got it to work finally.
11 Thur: cold and clear. WPA crew starting felling trees at corner. Bob and I went to the store and came home via Knaggs, Mrs Knaggs was in Portland.
12 Irene’s birthday: Mrs Potts, Bates, Stafeson, Lindstrom, Riffie, Johnson, and Marx were here: We also had Marx’s here for supper as it was their 24 wedding anniversary.
13 Sat: Cloudy and rain. I put on a new brush on generator on side next to wall. Louise and Bob got the mail. We stayed up with Bob and Louise and listened to radio until about 11 pm.
14 Sun. Bob and Louise went to church. This afternoon Bob and Louise went up to the Werner road. Irene and I walked over the new road. Bob took Louise home after supper and brought Jean home. 
15 Mon. Nice weather. Bob and I cleared brush west of the house, Irene baked bread.
16 Tue ; Bob and I cleared land out west of the house. Irene washed. Nice weather.
17 Wed: Bob and I cleared land west of the house. Louise Marx and Edith Fleshman were here about 20 minutes on their way home from a hike. Nice weather.
18 Thu Nice weather; Bob and I split wood. Bob did the splitting and I wheeled it down to the plank road.
19 Fri: cloudy; Bob and I worked on the wood as morning. Afternoon I went via Knaggs and to Colton. Lost grocery list and had to go back after spuds etc.
20 Sat Very nice weather; Bob split wood and I wheeled it down to plank road. Mrs Bates was here awhile with Mrs Knaggs.
21 Sun Nice day. Irene and Jean walked over to Knaggs and Bob went after them in his car. I rebuilt the wheelbarrow.
22 Mon - Cloudy. Bob split wood and I wheeled it. Irene washed clothes.
23 Tue: Bob split wood and I wheeled it. Mr Potts father and mother of Elwood were up here awhile.
24  Wed: Cloudy: Bob split wood and I packed it away. Floyd Freeman came by and helped us awhile.
25 Thu: Cloudy; Bob and I made wood all day.
26 Fri - Cloudy and showers of rain. I built a fire, but we did not feel good today, so we did not work.
27 Sat - Nice weather. I stayed around house all day sick. Bob cut of dead logs and also went to Colton after groceries.
28 Sun- Was sick all day and stayed on the davenport all day. Bob went to Marx’s. Jean and Irene went for a little walk. Nice weather.
29 Mon Nice weather. Stayed in bed sick all day.
30 Tue Nice weather. Had Mr Potts come up and give me a treatment today.
31 Wed. Nice weather; Bob split some wood- I walked up to where the road ends.
***********************   February. 1940 *****************


1 Thu Nice water. Mrs Sherman and her family were here today. Irene Bob and I went to Oregon City to see about road.
2 Fri - Bob and I split seasonal wood and wheeled it in to the woodshed. Irene baked bread. Rain after dinner.
3 Sat: I went to Potts and Bates but they were away from home. Read O’Henry’s Cabbage’s and Kings all day. Loraine visited Jean.
4 Cloudy- stayed home all day.
5 Mon- cloudy this morning. Bob and I walked over to Lee East’s mill. This afternoon we sawed an old log and built a fire and heavy rains.
6 Tue- rain all day. Bob and I went to Oregon City- SUEC would not pay me benefits before July. We stopped at Knaggs on the way home.
7 Wed - still raining. Fixed up grindstone sharpened up one of our axes.
8 Thu- Bob and I cleaned out some more rotten log.
9 Fri- Cloudy. Bob and I split wood visited Potts. Mr and Mrs Hulstrom were at Potts.
10 Rain- Put new brush on generator next to wall and also fixed grindstone and sharpened two axes and knifes.
11 Sun- Some sunshine. We all visited Knagg’s had nice chicken dinner. Bob and Jean walked home after dinner. Clark and I went over to Wen’s place. Erickson’s visited Knaggs.
12 Mon - Bob and I split wood all morning. Rained all afternoon. Irene was sick with a haywire back.
13 Tue Cloudy- Bob and I had to take Jean’s lunch to her as she forgot it. We split wood this afternoon. Butchered a rabbit today.
14 Wed- Bob and I cut out some rotten log and split wood until noon. Bob birthday and Irene cooked a swell rabbit feed.
15 Thu Nice weather: Bob and I split wood all morning. After dinner we took trails to Ebner’s and brought some furniture.
16 Fri - Rained all day and we did not work outside.
17 Sat : rain during am. Cloudy all afternoon. I packed a little wood this afternoon.
18 Sun Cloudy and some rain. Ilane Potts came up and visited us to Mr. Bates birthday party he was 37 yesterday. Johnsons were there. Jean and Bob stayed home.
19 Mon- nice weather; Bob and I split wood. Irene washed.
20 Tue- nice weather: Bob and I went to Mt. Angel also called on Mr Wood, Paulus and Schubert.
21 Wed.- nice weather; Bob and I split all the wood down by the corner stake today. The kids went to Marx’s this evening.
22 Thu - cloudy part am. Bob and I finished all the wood on the road at 10:30 am.
23 Fri- Bob and I built a fire and cut up some rotten wood. Jean stayed at Marx’s tonight.
24 Sat Rain all day. Irene visited Knaggs, Bob and I went after Jean and Verna and Louise came home with us. Albert and Elvera Marx’s were married today. 
25 Sun- Hard rains all day. Mr. and Mrs. Marx’s came about 2:30 pm. And stayed for supper. Verna and Louise went home with them this evening.
26 Mon- Mr Potts took Dora to school and I went along and we called on Mr Kruse and Judge Pope and they said they would blow the stump.
27 Tue - I went to Colton and phone to Ebner’s about our piano being sold to the Grange. Wind and Rain.
28 Wed- Bob and I drove to Colton and went with Bates, Minor and Johnson to Mt Angel and brought our piano.
29 Thu - Showers about every 20 minutes all day. Irene washed. Bob and I tried to split cedar above the flume.

1 Fri - Bob and I split cedar rail all morning. Roy Sullivan and Mr Sipes were here today to look at Alder. Rained all afternoon.
2 Sat- Nice weather: We took Mrs Knaggs to Oregon City with us and bought Jean a new pair shoes. Knaggs have a new Zenith radio.
3 Sun- The kids went to Marx’s Irene and I went Knaggs and I helped Clark put up an aerial. Erikson’s were there and their daughter. 
4 Mon - Rained all day. I and Bob were down to Potts awhile and I also called on Bates after dinner.
5 Cloudy. Bob and I cut cedar posts all day.
6 Wed - Cloudy rain. Irene washed. Bob and I went to Colton and stopped at Knaggs. Harold Johnson. Paid $8.00 on our piano for the grange.
7 Thu- Rain all day. Irene, Bob and I went to Salem and I called on Jory and he wants to see me again about a job.
8 Fri- I split posts above the saw dust pile. Bob was sick all day. Showers of rain during day.
9 Sat- Bob was sick all day. I made 13 posts over across from the dam. Jean got the mail. Had a sleet storm this evening.
10 Sun- Sunshine. Some sleet was still on the plank road this morning. Cut some wood and cleaned the barn out.
11 Mon Cloudy and showers. Put new brush on generator. Irene washed.
12 Tue - Nice weather. Did some work on generator in am. Bob and I cleared a little brush after dinner. The engineer of Ests mill was here awhile.
13 Nice weather. Went to Bales and got an old battery of K Johnson’s. Bob took Mrs L and Irene to Staffeson’s 
14 Thu - Nice weather. Bob and I spaded agarden all day. Tried to charge battery but the thing did not work very good.
15 Fri- Cloudy a few showers. Went to store for seeds. Talked with Mr Ireland about school bus. Bob and I planted 3 rows Blue Bantum peas today.
16 Sat- Fair weather. Bob and I fixed some ground for Irene. This afternoon moved donkey away. Louise and Verna came over. Bob went to the store.
17 Sun Nice weather. I got two windows and some wire from our old cabin. Marx’s came up this afternoon. Jean and Verna went home with them. Louise stayed here.
18 Mon- Nice weather. Bob and I moved donkey this am. Bob and Louise went for a hike to Knaggs falls etc. Irene and I worked up some ground for hot bed.
19 Tue- bob and worked on building fence all day. Nice weather.
20 Wed Nice weather. Bob’s and I put up some more fence. Went down to Bates a little while after supper.
21 Thu- Nice weather. Bob and I finished up some fence. I built a hot bed today. Irene went to Lindstrom’s with some women. Mr Mitchell was here this evening about the mill.
22 Fri- nice weather. Bob and I set the donkey engine this am. Finished our hot bed and planted some Burbank tomatoes seed.
23 Sat- Nice weather. Bob and I went up to Lindstroms a few minutes. Bob washed our car. Jean got the mail. Irene baked. Our mama rabbit was sick today.
24 Sun Easter. Nice weather. Bob and Jean went to Sunday school and we attended church and went home with Marx’s for dinner.
25 Mon- Cloudy ver little rain. Fixed a shovel handle for Lindstroms and spaded up some ground for Irene by the bunk house.
26 Tue Nice weather. Worked on fence awhile and planted tomatoes in hot bed. Irene planted peas.
27 Wed- Called on Mr. Weir, western off, and Ed Gross today. Also visited Benny. Stayed at Harts for the night.
28 Thu - Rain during afternoon. I called on LaSalle this morning and John Freese at Fenwicks Co. Dad Hart and Bessy came home with me.
29 Fri- Rain part of the day. Made a gate in the goat barn. The folks looked the flume over. Jean stayed a Marx’s.
30 Sat- cloudy. Bob and I took off a cut off saw for the donkey. Dad Hart, Verna, Jean and I went to Colton and also the Knaggs. Planted 4 rows of corn.
31 Sun - Rain. Bob and the kids went to Marx’s today. Dites came at 10 am. Donald and I got some cut wood after dinner Dites left with the folks at 5 pm.

1 Mon - Cloudy but no rain. I called on Potts awhile. Sharpened axes and Bob and I put up some more fence.
2 Tue - Nice weather. Fixed goat fence across the creek. Bob and I worked on the buzzsaw today.
3 Wed Stanford Cox came along and I walked to Potts with him. This afternoon Bob and I jacked up the flume. Rained heave all afternoon.
4 Thu - I called on HM Schubert and Roland Jory today. Bob stayed home as Irene was sick.
5 Fri - Cloudy. Irene washed and I worked in the buzzsaw. Bob worked in the shop all day on a wooden {pegged sp illegible} Went to Bates and bored some holes in iron.
6 Sat Cloudy all day. I worked on the buzzsaw nearly all day.
7 Sun Light showers during am. Floy Freeman visited us this am. Louise Marks came after Bob and Jean. Muggie had a buck and doe kids this afternoon. 
8 Mon Cloudy showers of rain. Knaggs, Bob and I went up to Mr Sipes goat ranch. We had dinner at the Knaggs about 2 pm. Drink. 
9 Tue Rain. I made a pen in wood shed for Muggies kids. Also fixed a shelf in goat shed. Fed the kids out of a pan this evening and the billy wouldn’t drinki
10 Wed Bob helped me fix a table on the buzzsaw. Mr Sipes came and took Nannie and the billie this evening.
11 Thu Nice weather. Bob and I fixed up buzzsaw and we had to run it but we had trouble with a pulley slipping. Mr Lindstrom left today to visit Ed.
12 Fri Nice weather. Bob and I finished up sawing our wood. We worked the garden the rest of the day. Irene planted 4 rows of carrots. 
13 Sat. Slight mist all morning. Bob Jean and I went to the store. Knaggs were not home. Jean went after the mail. Albert Potts birthday today.
14 Sun Cloudy. Verna and Louise went hiking with Bob and Jean. We went to Mr Potts birthday party.
15 Mon Rainy weather during the morning. Jean was 14 today. I worked up a plot in the front yard. Bob split stove wood.
16 Tue Bob and I worked up garden ground all day. We took Jean’s stuff to the school for Mrs Burts birthday party. We visited Knaggs during the evening. 
17 Wed Nice weather. Bob and I went to a ladies grange meeting. Mrs. Lindstrom came home today.
18 Thu Bob and I called Mr. LeSalle at Portland and then called on the Sherwood bunch. Irene washed. Jean attended Dorothy Martinson’s party tonite.
19 Fri. Cloudy Bob and I split wood for the water heater.
20 Sat I fixed up the jig saw this am. Put a new brush on generator this afternoon on side next to wall.
21 Sun Nice weather. Louise, Verna, Dorothy and Donald Martinson and the Lovel boy and Jean all went for a hike. Elverg and Seabert came up this afternoon. 
22 Mon Nice weather. I worked on generator and put a counter balance weight on. Irene planted onion sets and lettuce.
23 Tue Rains all day. Called on Mr. Potts this am. Visited with Bates after supper.
24 Wed I planted 8 rows of corn and we stacked up some more wood. We attended bus school meeting this evening.
25 Thu I worked in the shop all afternoon on Jean’s 4 H book. Cloudy weather. Albert and Alvera Louise and Verna were here and Verna stayed all nite. I was at Potts burning Jean’s book.
26 Fri Rain. I worked all morning on Jean’s 4 H book and took it to her school when I went after groceries.
27 Sat Bob and I wheeled wood most of the day. I went to Marx and got Jean. Mr Holts and the boys were here for supper tonite.
28 Sun Rained. I cut a pair of wooden shoes out for Jean. We stayed home all day.
29 Mon Nice weather. Bob and I sawed about a cord and a half of wood today.
30 Tue Rained all day. Mr Yackley was here during the afternoon. Irene went to Mrs Holts party. We attended Grange play tonight.

1 Wed Nice weather. Bob and I made stove wood all afternoon. Jean served for the dinner at the school tonight.
2 Thu Rain during am. I worked on Jeans’ wooden shoes. Earl and Erna and boys came about 10 am. 
3 Fri. Earl, Erna and Bob went up to the Hart cabin. They also went after bushes. Dorthy Martinson came out to visit Jean.
4 Sat Earl’s left and Irene and I drove to Vancouver and brought the folks home with us. Called on Mr Kelley at Oregon City.
5 Sun Cloudy. The Martinson boy came after Dorothy and they all went for a hike up Bull Mountain.
6 Mon Nice weather. Bob went to Salem but did not see Jory. Irene and Bessie went to Freeman’s party. Dad Hart and Bob went back to Salem. Planted peas.
7 Tue Nice weather. Bob and I worked on the wood all day. Irene washed.
8 Wed Nice weather. Bob and I worked on the wood awhile . I took the kids to the recital this evening. Called on Carl Sameson.
9 Thu Dad Hart and I went to Oregon City with Mr Yackley. Bob worked at Marx’s Irene and Bessy went to Kellers party.
10 Fri I hatched wood all day and Bob visited with Louise.
11 Sat Bob and I sawed up about 1 cord of wood.
12 Sun. Nice weather. Dad Hart, Bob and Louise went with me to visit Nannie at Mr. Sipes goat ranch.
13 Mon I started to clear some land up by the new road.
14 Tue Cloudy. I cleared some land and went to mail boxes.
15 I cut up log this morning and Dad Hart and I cut some maple wood off the hill for Donie.
16 Thu Bob and I sawed a cord of wood and I changed the donkey over . We went with the folks to Jean graduate from the 8th grade.
17 Fri Dad Hart and I pulled several logs today. Verna Lorraine and Donald Swearweage here. Bob brought Louise home.
18 Sat Nice weather. Dad an I went to store via Knaggs this am. Dale, Mable and Verna came this afternoon.
19 Sun Nice weather. Jean stayed at Martinson. Bob went to Marx’s. Dale and family left about 4:30 for home.
20 Mon Nice weather. Bob and I pulled log all day with the donkey. Irene washed.
21 Tue Nice weather. Bob and I moved the donkey and pulled the rest of the logs out of garden.
22 Wed Nice weather. Bob and I cut alder trees all morning. Mrs. Lindstrom and Mrs Bates were here this afternoon.
23 Thu Bob and I worked 3 hours in new garden. Bob took Bessy and Irene to Knaggs. We all were at Knaggs for supper.
24 Fri Worked on the land clearing and new garden. Got plow from Kellers place today.
25 Sat We finished plowing and working up the ground for our tomato patch. I went to the store.
26 Sun Nice weather. Bob went with Floy Freeman to Mulino.
27 Mon We took the folks to Vancouver. Irene put her fur coat in storage. Irene and Jean stayed up to the folks. I got home about 4:30 pm.
28 Tue Bob and Louise picked strawberries at Yackley’s I worked in garden all day and planted 21 tomato plants.
29 Wed I watered land this morning. Took plow back to Kellers. Ob, Louise and I went to Silverton and decorated Joyce’s grave. Had 2 blow outs on way home.
30 Thu Bob and I planted some more tomato plants and 3 rows of onions. Had nice rain from 3:30 pm.
31 Fri Cloudy with showers. Bob and I went to Mollala to get pump fixed . Grange paid $10 on piano balance due $17.

1 Sat Cloudy with light showers. Bob went berry picking.
2 Sun Cloudy. I fixed our pump this morning. Louise and Bob picked strawberries until noon.
3 Mon Cloudy. Bob and Louise picked strawberries. I planted corn, carrots, pencil pod beans, lettuce and mush mellons.
4 Tue Cloudy all day I worked in garden all day. Bob and Louise went to Vancouver and brought Irene and Jean home.
5 Wed Bob and Jean went berry picking. I planted water Mellon today. Our goldfish Solamon died.
6 Thu I worked in the garden all morning. Irene washed. Cleaned out flume.
7 Fri Mr. Staffason was killed today. Cloudy. I worked the garden all afternoon. Went to the store this am. Bob took Jean to 4H meeting this afternoon.
8 Sat Cloudy. Nice am. Bob and Jean went berry picking. I planted 39 hills of early spine cucumbers. Sperrys Seed.
9 Sun Hot weather: Bob went with Louise and the Freeman’s boy  all day. Irene, Jean, and I went to Sipes and I found Nanie about 3pm. She had a buck and doe kid with her.
10 Mon Hot weather. Bob and Jean picked berries. I cleaned up a little land. Louise came home with Bob and Jean.
11 Tue Hot weather. Bob and Louise painted car wheels all day. Mr Bates took our census report today.
12 Wed Not so hot today. I worked on the new ground by plank road. The kids picked berries. Verna came home with Jean tonight.
13 Thu Nice weather. Bob and I went to Portland and called on Mr Mayo and Mr Sampson. Had to get a used generator for Bobs car on way home.
14 Fri I worked in the garden all day. Jean and Verna cooked our dinner on their camp stove.
15 Sat Nice weather. I finished watering the garden and spaded ground. Bob and Jean finished Yackleys berries today. I went to Oregon City tonight with Marx’s.
16 Sun Nice weather. Bob went with Louise all day. We stayed home all day and had no company. Jean stayed home also.
17 Mon I finished Jeans shoes today. We went to carnival school meeting and Mr Gordon and Mr Swaggart were elected board members. Knaggs also went.
18 Tue I tried making a batch of goat cheese today. Irene washed.
19 Wed. I worked up the balance of the ground by plank road. Paul and Maxine Hagen and Muriel came about 12:30 noon and stayed all afternoon. Jean went home with Muriel.
20 Thu Planted beans today. Mrs Staney, Muriel, Dean and Jean came about 2pm. And left about 4:30. Clean came up this evening and we roasted weiners at our camp grounds.
21 Fri Nice weather. Did not work much today. Tony Lauby and Joe were here on the motorcycle this evening.
22 Sat Took a tire off this am. And we chinked up the flume. This afternoon I tested out the chevrolet’s generator on the water wheel.
23 Sun Hot weather. I experimented with the sprinkle awhile. Mr and Mrs Potts visits us this evening. Bob came house with Louise this evening.
24 Mon Hot weather. I fixed Irene a spice cupboard. Bob and Louise went after Stell and she came via Gauby(illegible) instead Oregon City. We and Knaggs voted at school meeting.
25 Tue Nice weather. Bob, Louise, Jean and I went to Portland, Vancouver, and Sherwood. Bob jhit a car and cracked the rear bumper loose on Union Ave. We see Percy and Corney La Salle.
26 Wed. I hoed the garden and sprinkled the tomatoes today. Bob and Louise picked a few strawberries for Irene.
27 Thu. Sprinkled garden all day.
28 Fri. Sprinkled garden and piped up cold and hot water to bath tub.
29 Sat Fixed gate on hinges over plank road. Bob helped me.
30 Sun Bob and Jean went to Marx. Bill Dixon family came up to pick berries. Left at 5 pm and went to Vancouver hd two flat tires at Oregon City. Got to Vancouver at 8:30.

1 Mon Dad Hart took us to bus depot and I spent the day in Portland looking for a job.
2.Tue toque Kites car to Portland today and looked for a job. This evening went to John Hugets with Date and Pauline.
3 Wed Went to Portland in Dites car to look for a job again today.
4 Dite’s took Peggy, I, and the folks to Colton and we stayed all day with Irene. They came back to pick some berries. And returned to Vancouver this evening.
5 Fri. I went in stage and called on Mr Roy Lux in Weatherly bldg out the Harris Supply com.
6 Sat Got up at 5am. Left folks at 7 am. And drove to Salem and called on Percy Blowdel at C.P.C. Got home about 12 noon.
7 Sun Louise, Bob, and Jean left about 3pm. for Marx’s and swimming. Ed Lindstrom went back to (illegible) today. Fred Hassing paid me $5.73 on Stark’s of flax plants.
8 Mon Roy Bates took about 15 lengths of mile pipe to irrigate with. Bob picked berries and Irene canned them. Worked in garden awhile.
9 Tue. Went to Knaggs this morning. Bobs and I cleaned out the plank road up by the mill today. 
10 Wed Hot weather. Bob and I brought down some timbers from the mile.
11 Thu. Hot weather. Bob went to Knaggs and took over their wash. I watered garden. Bob took Jean swimming this evening.
12 Fri Nice weather. Bob took Irene and Jean to Oregon City to get shoes for Irene. Had first light rain this evening.
13 Sat. Nice weather. I finished watering the garden. Bob and Jean went to Colton visiting this evening. Snoop [dog] killed a wood rat today.
14 Sun Nice weather. Bob went to church and Louise came home with him for dinner. We had two rabbits for dinner. Jean went to grange picnic..
15 Mon Put in applications at Iron Fireman Co. and called on C.PC company office, then came over to the folks place at Vancouver.
16 Tue Dad Hart and I feed a fence between the two places.
17 Wed Dad Hart and I got 2 tires at Montgomery Ward Company and went out to Iron Fireman Co.
18 Thu Dad Hart and I went to Pauline’s, Dubois and the aluminum Plant. I put up a rick of wood. Left 7:30 pm. And folks came home. Irene Bob and Jean went to Lutheran church.
19 Fri. Nice weather. I worked on the car awhile. Bob and Jean had a Weiner roast this evening with the Martensen kids. Nice rain this evening.
20 Sat Bob went to Portland and got Mrs. Martensen. Mrs Stanley and Muriel visit us the afternoon and evening. I butchered two more rabbits today. Had a  nice rain.
21 Sun. Cool and cloudy. Bob went to Marx’s after dinner. Harold Johnson visited this afternoon and paid $10 on piano. Leaves $7 due. Martinson boy was here tonite.
22 Mon Irene washed and we stayed around home all day. I hoed the garden. Rec’d two $9.45 check from S.U.C.C.
23 Tue Took the folks home and got to Vancouver about 11:30 am. Had to have $7.19 worth of work done on car. Bob also got up there in time for dinner.
24 Wed Left the folks and 7:15 am. Called on Iron Fireman, Libby’s, and the AFofL. Got home about noon. Had a backache. Clark Knaggs and Geo. Wentworth called at our place.
25 Thu Cloudy. Jean went to Salem with me and I called on Percy Blondell and Elmer Hill.
26 Fri. Lou and Verna Marx came about 9:30 am. I stayed around home all day. Mr Marx and Vange visited here this evening. Heavy rain. 
27 Sat Irene, Jean, Verna Marx and I went to Vancouver and visited all day. Louise stayed at our place. Bob Hart [ Irene’s older brother ] came home with us  in his car.  
28 Sun Cloudy. We drove to Vancouver this am. Visited Don and Mabel [ Hart  Irene’s younger brother] and folks all day. Irene and I came home this evening in our car.
29 Mon Cloudy. Bob, Don, and Jean came about 9:30 am. Bob and Don left after dinner on their way home. Bob Gillette started work today.
30 Tue. We were at Knaggs today.
31 Wed Went to Portland and called on Ed Gross.

1 Thu Hot weather.
2 Fri Hot weather.
3. Sat  I split a little wood and wheeled it to the woodshed.
4 Sun Hot weather. Barney and Leona and their two girls were here today. They brought a lot of fried chicken along.
5 Mon Hot weather. Watered garden all day. Marx’s brought Jean home after we went to bed. Also had birthday candy for me.
6 Tue I went to Salem and called on Mr Yoakum. State dairy inspection and phones LaSalles from Mollala. Reid Murdock Co. will give me a job next year.
7 Wed Took Muggins and Hedy [goats?] over to Sipes. Left home at 1:40 for Sherwood. Got a room at Jim Hoy’s place. Went to work at 6 pm. Worked until 11:30 pm.
8 Thu Went to work at 2 pm. And worked all night.
9 Fri Got up at 1:30 pm and went to post office.
10 Sat Got up at 10:30 and took some time cards over to cannery.
11 Sun Left Sherwood about 2 am. And got home at 4 am. Bessy and Dad Hart were at our place. Bob took them home in the evening.
12 Mon Went to the store and bought a tire at Stallmacher. Left at 3pm. And was in Sherwood at 4:30 pm.
13 Tue Let cannery about 10 am. as had to help start a new crew.
14 Wed Left cannery at 8:30 am. Got up around 3pm. And went to town until 6 pm.
15 Thu Nice weather had a full run of beans.
16 Fri Nice weather . Canned beans. I drawed $15.00 and paid Montgomery Ward $6.54 on tire.
17 Sat Very hot weather today. Not so many beans on hand at cannery.
18 Sun Left at 3 am. And got home at 4:30 am. Peggy, Bob Louise and Verna were there. Peggy and Bob left at 6pm. for Vancouver.
19 Mon Left at 3 pm. and got to Sherwood  at 4:30 pm.
20 Tue Canned beans on full shift.
21 Wed Nice weather I was sleepy all last night.
22 Thu We had a lot of beans at cannery last nite. Cool weather.
23 Fri Had an all night run of beans and also had some prunes to run. My pay was raised to $9.00 day beginning tonite.
24 Sat Rec’d letter from home.
25 Sun Cloudy. Had plenty of beans but not many prunes.
26 Mon Canned beans all night and prunes part of the night Dr. Simons pulled a front cross shaped tooth out this am.
27 Tues- We canned prunes and beans all night. Bob was here this afternoon and looking for a job. 
28 Wed Had Dr. Simons fill a molar on right side of mouth.
29 Thu I went home and took Irene box of peaches. Louise, Verna, Bob and Jean were there. Chuck and Mrs Ebner came as I drove out and I think Muriel was with them.
30 Fri Had a good night run of prunes.
31 Sat Drawed $25.00 and paid Mrs. Hay board up to Monday Sep 2nd.

1 Canned beans and prunes
2 Mon Took Irene pears and peaches. Dale and family and the Marx girls were at our place.
3 Tue We run out of prunes last night. I slept all day today. Received a package of laundry from home.
4 Wed Cloudy and cool. I got up at 2:30 pm and went down to Dr Simons office and had back left tooth packed. Hay and I went out to Tualitan before supper.
5 Thu Dr. Simons pulled out back left tooth.
6 Fri Went home and got my winter underwear as it was too cold in the cannery nights.
7 Sat Got paid today and I paid board and room bill.
8 Canned prunes and beans
9 Worked all nite as usual.
10 Tue Canned prunes and beans.
11 We only canned a few beans but canned a lot of prunes after they got a capper fixed.
12 Went home today direct from cannery, Dad Hart Bessy and Marie Hoyle were visiting at our place. I left at 6 pm. and got to cannery at 7:15 
13 Bought a pair of work pants
14 Sat Worked prunes all night.
15 Sun I went home and Louise came out before I got up.
16 Mon Worked prunes all night.
17 Tue Worked prunes all night.
18 Wed Worked prunes until midnight. I went home at 3:30 am. Louise was still at our place.
19 Thu Came back to Sherwood at 4:30 pm.
20 Fri Canned prunes again today.
21 Sat I finished up the beans tonight.
22 Sun- Paid Mrs Hoy and came home this morning. Irene was here alone.
23 Mon I split a little wood this afternoon.
24 -25 not notes entered
26 Thu - I split some wood today.
27 Fri - Light rain all day. I took generator to Portland Armature Com. and had it dressed. stayed with folks all nite.
28 Sat. I brought the folks home with me from Vancouver. 
29 Sun Cloudy Bob came home about noon.
30 Mon- Rained all day. Bob went back to Silverton.

1 Tue : Rained all day Bessy sewed. Bob came home this afternoon.
2 Wed: rained nearyall day or light showers. Dad Hart wanted to go home. 
3 Thu We split wood most of the day.
4 Fri Cloudy: we left at 5 pm. and took the folks up to 
Vancouver.
5 Sat: Nice weather: Bessy, Jean, Irene and I shopped in Vancouver. Irene bought shoes. I got a Winter King Battery $5.00 We came home after dinner.
6 Sun Nice weather. Bob went to Silverton. I put in my new battery. Bob came back with Bob Martinson and left again.
7 Mon Irene washed. Bob and I split up the balance of the wood by the goat shed. Changed aerial from bank house to on house.
8 Tue Nice weather. I worked on our radio most of the day. Our old radio played the best.
9 Wed: Bob went to Siolverton to get his check. I phoned from Johnson's for a fire permit and burnt some logs. Bob went out some place this evening.
10 Thu Bob and I started up the donkey and pulled some logs out and cut them.
11 Fri Bob and I took radio to Mr Angel to check it over. Colton high school held initiation today. Irene and I went to Colton and brought Jean, Loraine, and Paul home.
12 Sat Nice weather. I worked on our radio all day but did not get it the work right.Bob and Jean went to Marx's but the kids were not home. 
13 Sun Nice weather: I found a dead .15 ohm resistor in our radio and it played fine after I replaced it.
14 Mon Bob and I burnt logs all day. This evening Irene and I called on Mrs Reuben and then visited Knaggs as it was Clarkes birthday. 
15 Tue: Bob and I cut up logs and burnt them. Bob and Jean went to Marx's and the Martinson kids came home with them and they toasted marshmallows.
16 Wed Bob went to Colton to register for the draft army drawing. I fixed up my fire, Mr Adams of Mulino bought Jeans bike for $20.
17 Thu Bob and I went to Mt Angel and brought back Tony's clarinet and sax and left them with Mrs Reuben.
18 Fri: Hot weather. Went to Colton and sent Tony [Lauby]  $15 for his clarinet.
19 Sat: Bob and I put the saw on the donkey. Hot weather. Jean and Bob went to Marx's tonite.
20 Sun: Rained most of the day. Bob went out on a day and Chuck Ebner and Vic Hassings was here. I worked on my radio etc.
21 Mon: We went to store got a new stove for water heater. Also split some wood this afternoon.
22 Tue Cloudy. Bob and I cut up about 1 cord of wood with donkey saw and wheeled most of it in shed.
23 Wed Rain. Irene and I went to Salem, also Bob went along. I called on mr Yochem of Reid Murdock Company.
24 Thu Rained all day. Bob went to Mt. Angel and  stayed with Chuck all nite.I worked on radio.
25 Fri I split up the rest of the wood we had cut. Bob and I jacked up the flume this afternoon.
26 Sat Cloudy: I put the coil in the new stove at the wash house. Loraine was here with Jean this afternoon.
27 Sun Nice weather. Irene, Jean and I went to visit the folks. Bob stayed home. There were all OK.
28 Mon Rainy weather. Worked on our old radio awhile today.
29 Tue Bob and I went to Estacada and Oregon city today and got Bob's draft no 519 and called on Judge Pope about our road.
30 Wed Stormy weather rained showers all day. Bob and I sawed and split a little wood. Irene baked bread and cookies.
31 Thu Halloween. Rain/ I fooled around bunk house all day. Verna Marx stayed all nite with Jean. They had party at Loraines.

1 Fri Bob and I sawed split up some wood this am. Rained all afternoon. Jean stayed at Marx's tonight.
2 Sat Cloudy with rain I tried a crossly radio coil out. Bob richard, Vange and louise pulled Oregon grape root today.
3 Sun Cloudy. we stayed home all day. I tested out a radio during the morning. Bob went to Marx's to get Jean.
4 Mon Nice weather. first freeze last night. Bob and I cut up some more wood with the donkey and put it in the shed.
5 Tue Cloudy today we go to town to vote President roosevelt was reelected for a 3rd term.
6 Wed. I went to Portland and Vancouver called on Irene Fireman and aluminum co. Stayed at the folks tonight.
7 Thu Rained all day. Called on Steamfitters local of the A.F.of L. Willamette Iron and Steel Co. came home this afternoon.
8 Fri Bob and Chuck went to Portland to look for jobs. Bob got home about 5 pm. and took Irene and Jean to Vancouver to visit the folks a few days.
9 Sat Rain most of the day. I worked in the power house all afternoon. Two cars came up to look at the mill today.
10 Sun Rain all day. I stayed in the house most of the day.
11 Mon Armistice Day. Had to fix up the flume as a snag broke a couple boards loose. Johnson, bates and Richard's were up here this afternoon. Irene and kids got home at 5:30. 
12 Tue About 24 degrees this am. Nice clear weather. Bob ob went to Mt Angel. I worked in the power house all afternoon..
13 Wed 24 degrees this am. I painted the baby bed this am. Bob  and I sawed up some more wood this afternoon.
14 Thu: Nice weather but cool. Bob and I went to Portland and called on the A.F.ofL. Steamfitters union.
15 Fri Nice weather 23 degrees am. Irene washed. Bob and I cut up some more wood. Jean stayed at Marx's.
16 Sat Bob and Richard went to look for Scotchbroom tips. I went to Marx's to get Jean and we stopped at Knaggs.
17  Sun Rained all day. I wrote some letters.
18 Mon Clear cold weather. Bob and I finished up filling the wood shed. Tree knocked another board off the flume this afternoon
19 Tue Clear. I fixed cover for power house smoke stack.
20 Wed. I went to the store and home via Knaggs. Went to Estacada mill to see about job but he had a full crew hired.
21 Thu Roosevelt Thanksgiving. We stayed home and had a nice dinner. chuck Ebner and fry came after supper. Bob went home with them.
22 Fri Clear weather. Roy Bates and I went to Portland and called on the Irene Fireman Co. again. 
23 Sat 28 degrees at 7 am. Had to put 2 new brushes on generator and worked it over. Chuck, Paul and Maxine brought Bob home. tonight from Mt. Angel.
24 Sun Rain. We went over to Knaggs awhile this afternoon. Bob went out this evening and played the pipe organ down at Colton.
25 Mon Cloudy and cool . Had to go to Mollalla and then Silverton to get some new pump leathers.
26 Tue cloudy. I fixed the pump this morning. Went to Portland this afternoon. Stayed at the folks tonight.
27 Wed Cloudy and rains. Called on ed Gross and also see Bob Eddy at american Can Co. Bates took Paul to the hospital today.
28 Thu heavy rains today. vault Bates was operated on for appendicitis. Verna came home with Bob and Irene and Bob took them to the game tonight.
29 Fri Cloudy. Creek was high today. Called on Bates this am. to see how Paul was. Made an arch support for left foot this afternoon. Bob took Jean to pray tonight.
30 Sat Nice day mostly cloudy. Bob and I cleaned up boards at mill this afternoon. Went to store this evening. Colton had a heavy fog.

1 Sun Cloudy. we stayed home all day. Chuck Eber, Elizabeth Lauby and Vonie Schindler were here after supper.
2 Mon Bob went out with Richard Bates after Xmas trees. Irene washed. Had Stalneckers fix the extra leaves back into the front springs on Cheve[rolet car].
3 Tue Cloudy. Bob, richard Bates and I went to Portland. Called Mr Gross on phone about Iron Fireman's Co. job. Met Bates at Oregon City. Mr Satler rode home with us. 
4 Wed Chuck and Ambrose Ebner came last nite and got Bob. I took Irene to see Dr. Klenisonge today.
5 Thu Cloudy and rains. we had to chop an old tree off the plank road. Mr. and Mrs bill Swanson and his mother visited us today. We had them stay for supper.
6 Fri Nice weather. Irene and i went to the store. They came back via Knaggs. we took Clark to Mollalla to get Martha as he could not get their car started.
7 Sat Wrote a letter to my folks and also one to Bob as he got work with BP Johnson in Portland. Potts came home last nite. I took dog back today. Chuck brought Bob home tonite.
8 Sun Rain all day. I put a new brush on generator. We went to Marx's and got Jean this afternoon. They gave us cabbage and  apples. Verna came home with Jean.
9 Mon 24 degrees clear and cold. Irene washed. I cut some wood with the donkey this afternoon.
10 Clear and cold 22 degrees. I started up to Sifes and met Mr Sifes coming out above Canyon creek. This afternoon we had turkey dinner at Potts. Grandpa Potts and Mr hailstorm were there. Today was our wedding day.
11 Wed Cold clear weather. I got a trailer load of boards from the mill and started to build a turkey pen this afternoon.
12 Thu Cold weather, finished turkey pen today. Put on two used brushes on the positive side of the generator.
13 Fri about 16 degrees in the bunk house porch. Took Jean to the school play and we visited Knagg's this evening.
14 Sat 18 degrees this am. Verna stayed with Jean all nite and they went to Basketball game at Mt Angel tonight. I bought Jean home from Kellers after the game.
15 Sun cold weather. Bob and I went down to Potts and got the white turkey. they gave us. duke Cole was there trying to thaw out their frozen up pipes.
16 Mon My dad was 75 years old today. Irene washed and i cut some wood with donkey saw. Bob went back to town this am.
17 Tue Cloudy but warmer. Bill Swanson was up here awhile this am. I split wood . Built roof shed over pump. Brought kids home from mail box. Jean was sick.
18 Cloudy. Wrote letter this am. and went to mail box. Jean stayed in bed all day.
19 Cloudy with light showers. Had to start Mrs Potts washing machine for her. fixed stop light on car. and put new ground wire on donkey engine.
20 Fri 40-50 degrees this am. and raining. Duke Cole brought me home from the mail box and then came up to see our light plant.
21 Sat I went to the store this afternoon and stopped via Knaggs on way home. Martha gave Jean a pencil and sent Irene $1.00.
22 Sun Nice day. Site, Pauline, and best came down today and brought as a lot of stuff. site, Bob and I cut some more maple from the mill.
23 Mon First day work at Lee Estacada mill fixing the boiler.
24 Tue worked half a day at the mill today.
25 Wed Xmas Day. Dad Hart gave me a new pipe. Gary Larsen 3 models. Ernest Gillette 1 pound of Sr Walter Raleigh. Aunt Maime a belt . Dad Gillette socks, hankie and tie.
26 Thu Worked at mill all day., but the gang did not come to work until about 9 am.
27 Fri Cloudy. Red'd letter from Ernest Gillette advising us to meet him and Irene and I went to Portland and met him at stage depot on 5th and Burnside. 
28 Sat I got off at noon. Went took Ernest to the store and then visited Knaggs on way home. Bob brought Jean home today.
29 Sun Nice weather. Ernest and i went up to the mill and also visited Potts a few minutes . We showed him the movies tonite.
30 Mon. Worked until noon as the edger learning burnt out. Ernest came over to the mill. We took him to Vancouver and he went back to his company tonight.
31 Tues. clear freezing weather this am. I worked at mill until 2 pm. They broke eccentric straps on engine. Went to store and order auto license today.
