Extra notes by Joyce
Reference to Dite is Dwight Wellington Hart. Irene’s younger brother. He originally had homestead land almost next to the Gillettes in Colton. At the time of this diary the Gillettes were still living on their homestead land. They moved eventually to another piece of property that they called Elwood. There is an Elwood road in Colton Oregon. The homestead land in 2011 was owned by a company that logged forest land. No building still exist on the property but a road runs up my where house use to stand. They had a water wheel that Frank had built so they had electricity. No phone was available and telegrams were used to send notices.
