Feb 28th 1939 Tuesday - cloudy with a little sunshine now and then. I packed posts until about 10 a.m. then I went down to Johnson’s and packed 2 jugs of buttermilk out. Irene baked bread. This afternoon Lindstrom and I tried to cut posts and made several cuts but they were broken and we could not use them. 

Feb 27th Monday - Rain: during morning I took 2 jugs to Johnson is for buttermilk and left them for creamery truck to pick up. Packed posts with Ed this afternoon. Irene washed some cloths for Lindstrom . Put on a new brush on generator this afternoon on on side next to wall no 220.

Feb 26th Sunday - Cloudy with rains: Worked around awhile this morning. We called on Rex Gordons and then went on and visited Knaggs all afternoon and had supper with them. Mrs Warren and Sadie were also at Knaggs awhile during the afternoon. 

Feb 25th, Saturday - Cloudy with rain and sleet: I worked on Potts washing machine from about 9a.m. to 4 p.m. and he paid me $2 and gave me a ball bearing for my generator. Jean stayed at Marks last night and Verna and Evaline brought her home this afternoon.

Feb 24th Friday - Cloudy Cut some wood and then about 10 a.m. Lindstorm came down and reported that the Mrs was sick. He went to Potts to call the doctor. Cut some more wood and Irene and and I went to Potts and then up to Lindstrom  with regards to phone call to the doctor. 

Feb 23rd Thursday - Cloudy all day. Worked on Potts washing machine about 3 hours and located 2 broken gears. Irene helped me full over a 30 foot log with donkey I used Davights saw and made 7 cuts in log. It sure cut fast.

Feb 22nd Wednesday - Nice weather all morning I worked around cutting brush on hillside awhile. This afternoon Lindstrom bucked up some of the logs on hillside across creek. Cloudy and light mist. I went down to look at Potts washing as it was haywire.

Feb 21st Tuesday - Nice weather 28 degrees at 6 a.m. I packed fence posts all morning and Irene wash at the power house. Packed posts this afternoon until 3:30 p.m. and Lindstrom helped. Cut out a log at the dam.

Feb 20th Monday - Nice weather: Took Lindstrom to town and he brought Mrs Lindstrom and the baby home this afternoon. I helped them pack the baby and Ed carried his wife from the mill. 

Feb 19th Sunday - Went over to Dite’s and also stopped in to see birds Cleveland’s baby. Date gave me an axe wedge, grub hoe and a good cross cut saw. e left about 3 p.m. and came home. Met Stameys on the plank road at Potts place.

Feb 18th - Light mist this morning but nice weather rest of the day. We left at 10 a.m. and arrived at Peggy’s about noon. went to Dete’s )?) and then to plywood plant to get Roy. Showed our movies to Dite’s Irban’s and Earls at Dites place. 

Feb 17th Friday - Clear weather: I packed on a bed frame up to Lindstoms, Irene baked for Windstorms. We cut post this afternoon.


Feb 16th Thursday - Clear and nice weather Irene washed this morning and I cut up some wood for the heater. Lindstrom and I cut posts this afternoon and I cut posts this afternoon, we got 35 posts.

Feb 15 Wednesday High winds and rained most of the night. I fixed up the garage roof as the wind had shook one of the braces, Took Lindstrom and Nora to Oregon City this afternoon we called on Judge Pope. 

Feb 14, Tuesday - Stormy weather all day I cut a little wood for the heater. Irene and I went down to the bridge to see how high the water was up. 

Feb 13 Monday - Stormy weather . Stayed around house during morning. This afternoon Irene baked bread and I pulled a hemlock log across the creek with with the donkey. 


Feb 12th  Sunday- Heavy rains during day. I went to Oregon City and met Lindstrom at hospital. Their little baby was born at 11:30 a.m. today. Came home and worked up at the dam cutting out logs etc. all afternoon. 

Feb 11 Saturday - Stormy weather: I went to see how the  Lindstrom children were getting along. Called on Bates awhile and he helped me get his car started up the plank road. High winds all evening. I took some phono records and some bread up to Lindstroms this evening.

Feb 10th Friday - Warmer but we still had about 11 inches of snow on  plank road. I made a feeding table for the wild birds east of house. Lindstrom and I shoveled snow off the plank road all afternoon. About 7:30 pm Windstorm came and ask me to get ready to take Mrs. Lindstrom anew arrived at Oregon City hospital about 9p.m. got home about 12:30 pm.


Feb 9th Thursday - Clear about 20 degree at 6 a.m. I tested the temperature of the creek water today it was 38 degrees F.H. Windstorm visited us nearly all morning I took some letters to the mail boxes. Cut some alder wood for the heater when I got home. Snowing again this afternoon.

Feb 8th Wednesday - Still have plenty of snow. I cut up an alder pole for the bunk house heater this afternoon. Jean went to school as usual. 

Feb 7th, Tuesday - About 6 inches of snow on ground when we got up this morning. I stayed around the house nearly all day. Had a couple of light snows during the day. Irene made about 3 large snow balls. 

Feb 6th Monday - Clouldy weather: Windstorm and I made cedar posts part of the morning and also made a few this afternoon, but we had several hard flurries of snow.

Feb 5 Sunday - Cloudy weather. Windstorm visit awhile this morning. We stayed home all day and I read a western. Story and a couple short stories out of a O. Henry.

Feb 4, Saturday - Cloudy and cold wind. Linsdstrom and I cut dear posts during morning. This afternoon we took Windstorm to Mollalla and Irene and Jean stopped in and visit Martha Knaggs. This evening we visited Potts and played Pedro awhile with them. 

Feb 3, Friday Cloudy weather with a few light rains during the day. Windstorm and I cut 72 cedar fence posts today.

Feb 2 Thursday - Very light snow  on ground this morning. Cloudy all day and ground hog could not see his shadow if that means anything. I called on Potts a while this afternoon and he was having trouble with the electric equipment on the incubators. 

Feb 1 1939 Wednesday - Cold and freezing this morning but it warmed up and we had sunshine all day. I cut up the rest of an alder log this morning. Irene went to Mrs. Rogentine’s birthday party today with Mrs. Pott and Mrs Bates. I raised up a section of the flume this afternoon and then split alderwood.

Jan 31st Tues. - Cloudy and a light snow fell during the a.m. Windstorm and i cleared out the cottonwood and alder trees on the plank road up by the ill. Clear and sunshine this afternoon. Irene helped me pull over an alder log and I cut about 12 cuts. Jean stayed with Verna Marks tonight.

Jan 30, Monday- Cut about 12 blocks of wood and split it up during the afternoon. Irene baked bread and pie this afternoon. Had sunshine all morning and cloudy weather all afternoon.

Jan 29, Sunday- cloudy with showers of rain and light flurry of snow. Stayed around the house most of day. Called on Albert Potts awhile this afternoon to see him about some chickens for J.T.Bauman of Mt. Angel.

Jan 28th Sat. - Cloudy this morning: I hooked up the donkey engine and Irene helped me let out cable and we pulled over a log. Jean and I went to the mail boxes. Rained with some high winds during the afteroon.

Historical note on donkey engine: http://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/donkey_engine/#.VYjW_2CZPyo  I'm sure that Grandpa Gillettes version of a donkey engine was a much smaller variety. The picture here is one used for production log pulling. 


Jan 27th Friday - Cloudy and rain most of the morning. I split up several cuts of wood this morning. Finished up my wood this afternoon and rained pretty hard, so I went in house.

Jan 26th Thursday - Cloudy all morning with a few light showers. I cut wood all morning. This afternoon I took the generator out and dressed down the mica seperators on the commentator? Also finished the log I was cutting on. Irene went to the mail boxes.

Jan 25th, Wednesday 0 Cold but clear weather all day. Heated up the hot water in the power house and Irene washed today. Split up the wood cuts. I had left and then Ireene ran the donkey engine and we pulled over another log.

Jan 24, Tuesday - Rain and fog all day. I cut up some of the wood and wheeled it in woodshed. This afternoon I called on Mr. Sear’s awhile.

Jan 23, Monday - I split up hemlock wood this morning. Nice weather all day. This afternoon I pulled over another log and made 7 or 8 cuts in it.


Jan 22 - Sunday - The American wild Life Iss Washington lecture with the martin at 9:30 am. 
Rex Gordon and Mrs Sorensen and her girls and their boy friends came through here today. Dote, Pauline, Donald and Roy and Peggy to visit us today. They brought a nice supply of canned fruit potatoes, apples etc. Light mist today.


Jan 21 - Saturday- Clear weather about 24 degrees at 8 a.m. I brought down a wheel barrow load of cedar blocks from the mill. Had some trouble getting the donkey engine started. then pulled a hemlock log over with donkey. Got 16 blocks out of log for heater wood. Irene baked bread today.

Jan 20th - Friday- nice weather: I jacked up the first section of the water flume at the dam this morning. Irene and I went to Knaggs and took Martha with us to Colton. We met Joe Srauer and Bill and Carl on the way. When we came home they were at our place. I showed them around our place. Joe came up to see about 200 cedar posts.

Jan 19th Thurs. - Nice weather with sunshine checked over my saw a little and then made 5 cuts in 18 inch log this morning. Splits up 9 cuts this afternoon and haled it in the wood shed. Windstorm is busy shingling Potts border house.

Jan 18th Wed. - Cloudy all day but nice weather all day. I filed saw awhile and made 3 cuts on log. Irene attended a grange pow wow at Bates this afternoon. Mr. Bates and Mr. Johnson visited me this afternoon.

Jan 17th - Tuesday- Cloudy and some light rain during the day. I pulled an 18 foot log across the creek this afternoon and made a few cuts on it.

Jan 16, Monday - Cloudy weather: I bucked a couple of cuts through along across the creek and then got the rigging ready to pull it across the creek. Windstorm and Levie ? took Potts shingles down in Nails truck Donkey engine would not start, so I took carburetor in the bunk house and took it apart. Mr. Potts came up and borrowed the charger.

Jan 15, Sunday: Nice weather: I cut up the last two cuts of the 30” log and wheelsd it into the wood shed. Note Joyce assumes he meant that log was 30 inches across. Mr Baker of Colton ad Mr. Hinkel were here and looked over our light plant and the nails saw mill.  Question by Joyce are the Nails a neighbor?

Jan 14th, Saturday - Nice weather: I wrote a letter to John beyer and also wrote Mr Koch of Newborn about road rightly. Packed idler bearing on the light plant this morning. This afternoon Irene and Jean went to the mail box. I split up wood and wheeled it in the wood shed.

Jan 13, Friday - Sunshine all day. I cut wood and finished all the but endow the big tree from across the creek . Irene cleaned up the bunk house this afternoon.

Jan 12, Thursday. - Irene’s birthday. I cut wood all day. Cloudy weather, but no rain. Windstorm and Leivie have been cutting shakes for the last two days. About 6 ladies came up to our place this afternoon and gave Irene a birthday party.

Jan 11, Wednesday - Cut wood most of the morning. Had a little fine mist for awhile this morning.

Jan 10, Tuesday - Took pulley block apart and tried to put on another part, but it would not fit. Rigged it up on tree by garage and pulled hemlock log across creek. Cut up hemlock log into wood. Pulled 3 foot log across creek this afternoon.

Jan 9 Monday - Cloudy and a light mist part of the day. Heated wash water for Irene this morning. worked on stump puller all day blocking it up and finally got the anchor cables drawer tight about 4p.m.


Jan 8, Sunday - Cloudy but no rain. I wheel 3 loads of wood from aloe the mill, also brought down a tree for the stump puller blocking. This afternoon I put on a new brush in the generator on side next to wall. Went over to see Mr. Georger Mcspon about road but no one ws home Ole Raske was in the yard. I went on up to the new mill and see the Holt brothers.


Jan 7, Saturday. - Cloudy no rain. Checked over ignition on stump puller. Moved stump puller from bridge over Spring to the wood shed today. Jean went after the mail and Irene baked cookies. 

Jan 6, Friday - Cloudy and cool. I had Mr. Bates bring out the spark plugs from Stauhneckers which I had forgot when I was down there . We showed movies to the Windstorms this evening. According to paper the the Stiney (?) blew out a tumbler at the laundry today.

Jan 5th, Thursday - cool and frosty during the morning. I ground the values on the stump puller this afternoon.

Jan 4th Wednesday - Hard Rains all morning, Irene canned 18 pint jars of beef today. I stayed in house all morning. This afternoon the rain let up for about 2 hours. I cut up 4 lengths of dead alder wood, and soldered a gallon pail.

Jan 3, Tuesday - Cludy and light rains. I went to Knaggs for milk and then to Colton. Had Stalhnecker reface values of donkey engine. Bought 25 pubs of beef for $2.9 from Davidson.

Jan 2, Monday - Cloudy part of the day. I removed the values out of the donkey engine this morning. Mr. Englunds visited us a few minutes just after dinner. Mr. Pott’s visited me for a couple of hours this evening at the bunk house.

Jan 1, 1939 - Sunday  Rained all day. We stayed home all day and I cut a little wood during the afternoon.

Frank used an older book from 1938 and changed or modified all the dates as he used the book for his notes from 1939. He titled it Cedar Home Ranch, Colton Oregon.

May 31, 1935 Fri- Cool weather; worked in office all day. Called on strawberry growers in evening. Bob went with me.

May 30, Thu- Dad Hart, Bessy, Dite, and Pauline were down here today in Dite’s new car and helped decorate Joyce’s grave. Then went to homestead.

May 29, Wed- Cool weather; Worked in office all day. Irene and I went to Silverton in evening to fix up cemetery lot.

May 28, Tues- Nice weather; Was feeling bum today, but stayed around office all day.

May 27, Mon- Nice weather; attended business mens lunch.

May 26- Sun- Nice weather; Took Peggy home. Called on Ira Cusick this a.m. Visited Earls awhile. Irene caught catfish out of boat. Came home about 6:30 p.m.

May 25, Sat; nice weather; worked in office all day.

May 24, Fri.- nice weather; worked in office all day. Joe Hassler and Joe Brown started to repair cannery and make. crates


May 21, Tues.- nice weather; write letters most of the day.

May 20, Mon.- nice weather; Worked around office all day.

May 19, Sun.- nice weather; Bob and I went up to Colton and chained off front line of our place.

May 18, Sat.- nice weather; Irene bought a pair of shoes the a.m.

May 17, Fri.- cloudy and some rain; Worked in office all day. Bob and Frank Slabe played at Elks club last nite in Salem.

May 16, Thu.- light showers; Mr Weimacht and Mr Zellner (?) were out inspecting wood today. Mr Salvester fixed up joint deed on our homestead today.

May 15, Wed.- nice weather; attended prune code meeting along with canners this afternoon.

May 14, Tues.- Cloudy; worked in office all day. Not much doing today.

May 13, Mon.- nice weather’ worked in office had directors meeting that was rather out of ordinary.

May 12, Sun- nice weather; We went up to Silver Creek Falls this afternoon.

May 11, Sat.- nice weather, but warm; We went to Silverton this evening to get my refigured (?) suit, but tailor was not in.

May 10, Fri.- Worked in office most of day. Looked over a couple of fruit orchards.

May 9, Thur.- nice weather;worked in office all day.

May 8, Wed - nice weather; Called on Mr. Culloughn, Weinmacht, Pickens and Wruble today . Note: transcriber unsure of spelling of names.

May 7, Tues - nice weather; Durham and Bales fellows were here today. Wampach also stopped in awhile. We went to Cole Maekberry. Dance program this evening.

May 6, Mon- nice weather; Called on Nails Bros. at sawmill on our place today. Called on Wampach and Weinmacht in evening.

May 5, Sun.- Nice weather; Called on Nails Bros. at saw mill on our place today. Called on Wampach and Weinmacht in evening.

May 4,  Sat- Nice weather; Worked in office all day. Words in garden after supper.

May 3, Fri- Nice weather; Worked in office all day. Irene went with kids to salem in afternoon to county musical program.

May 2, Thur- Nice weather; Called on Phil Tuay and some loganberry growers this afternoon and evening.

May 1, 1935, Wed.- Nice weather worked in office all a.m. Took Irene to Portland and she bought here a coat from Olds, Wortman and King this afternoon. Called on loganberry growers in evening.

Apr 27, Sat - Nice weather; Took mortgage papers back to recorders office to get them changed. Irene and I went to Silverton in the evening.

Apr 26, Fri - Nice weather; Worked in office all day. Irene, Peggy and Jean went to Salem with me in evening seen capitol fire and I went to Prune meeting.

Apr 24, Wed. - Nice weather; Worked in office all day. Mr Walenmark (?) and bank attorney were here. Also called on May McCullogh and Bernt (?). 

Apr. 23, Tue - Cloudy; We had a directors meeting last night. Got out preferred stockholder letters and new agreement today. Went to Silverton to see Palace Theater fire.

April 22, Mon - Rained all day; Took mother Hart to Portland, she got her new glasses from Dr. Frazer. Peggy got her a new suit at Montgomery Wards. I called on Ed Gross and came home.

Apr 21, Sun - Rain; Called on Knaggs and then Nails then we went to Vancouver and stayed all night. The boys were there fixing kitchen.

Apr. 20, Sat - Cloudy and cool; Got Weimacht to sign up checks today.

Apr. 19, Fri- Nice weather; attended Loganberry code meeting. Roy Lux took John Rainge (?) and I to dinner.

Apr. 18, Thu - Cloudy and cool; Mr Zellner, Mr Wamperch and I finally got Mr Weimacht to sign up mortgage papers for cannery loan this afternoon.

Apr. 17, Wed- Worked in office all day. Chaff and I took his radio to Wierners radio shop this evening.

Apr. 16, Tue.- Worked in office all day/ Phaff and I worked on his radio again this evening.

Apr. 15, Mon. Raining today; Worked in office all day. Worked on Phaff’s radio in evening but blew it out pretty bad. [NOTE JEAN ELOISE GILLETTE'S 9TH BIRTHDAY]

Apr. 14 Sun- Stayed around the house all day.

Apr 13, Sat - Nice weather; Weimacht advised attorney Harris not to send out preferred stockholders notice. I called on Spears (?) in afternoon.

Apr 12, Fri. - Had Directors meeting then they met with a few preferred stockholders in warehouse to see if they could get stock for $40 a share.

Apr 9, Tue- Nice weather; worked in office.

Apr 8, Mon- Cloudy and Rains; Had preferred stockholders meeting but it did not turn out very good.

Apr 7, Sun.- Cloudy and cool; We went to Vancouver and Peggy came back with us this evening. (Note Peggy is Margaret Hart, Irene’s sister. She was born in May 26, 1916 so would be 18 at the time soon to turn 19)

Apr 6, Sat- Nice weather. Worked in office all day.

Apr 5, Fri- Cool and Rains; Worked in cannery all day. Irene and I went to Silverton this afternoon to get some flowers for little boys funeral. 

Apr 4 Thu.- Cloudy and light rains; Called on Mr. Hubbs of Hawkins and Roberts in Salem about a bond. Frank Lhaffs ? little baby Jerry died this afternoon by shocking to deaths

Apr 3, Wed.- Cloudy and light rain; City gravelled cannery street today with railroad gravel.

Apr 2 - Tues- Nice weather; Worked in office all day.

April 1, 1935. Mon.- Cloudy: We received word that two car loads of gravel were here for the cannery street.

Mar 30, Sat.- nice weather; Silverton boys had a bike race from here to Silverton today. Roy Gardner and Bob were out together to night.

Mar 29, Fri.- Nice weather; Was out to Warmpackers (?) about signing Stock certificates. T.B Enders was up awhile in the evening.

Mar 28, Thu.- Real nice weather; I attended logan berry code meeting in Salem today.

Mar. 27, Wed.- Real nice day; Mailed notices of preferred stockholders meeting.

Mar 26, Tues. - Rains and wind; worked in office all day. Irene and I went to Palace in evening . See Shirley Temple in the Little Colonel. 

Mar 25. Cold windy; Had a special directors meeting and old Weimacht tried to our salary.

Mar 24, Sun - Heavy storm with lots winds and rain; We stayed home all day.

Mar. 23, Sat.- Cold and rains ; worked in office all day.

Mar 22, Fri.- High winds and rain’ worked in office all day. Irene was sick all day with one of her old troubles. Readmits of S.P Co. (? Southern Pacific Railroad?) called at cannery about road. 

Mar 21, Thu. Cloudy: Mr Weimacht and I went to Salem to see Campbell of the State Accident Commission in the afternoon.

Mar 20, Wed.- Stormy and Showers; Bob and Frank Lauby(?) went to Silverton to arrange for a program.

Mar 19, Tue.- cloudy and windy; Mr. Weinmacht and I called on Mr. Max Geylen in Salem.

Mar 18, Mon.- cloudy and rain ; worked in office all day getting out spot lists to the trade.

Mar 17, Sun.-cloudy heavy rains with some sunshine. We took Dad and Bessie home today and got home at 5 p.m.

Mar. 16 Sat.- nice weather; worked in office all day. Bob went to Portland after he took his lesson with Ebner boy.

Mar 15, Fri.- Cloudy and rainy: worked in office invoicing orders today. took Dad Bessie and Irene over to Newborn to visit Bennett in the evening.

Mar 14. Thu.- Cloudy and windy; worked in office all day. Attended Bankers (or backers) banquet at Hotel in evening.

Mar. 13, Wed.- Nice weather: Attended loganberry code meeting at Salem. Dad Hart and bob went over with me.

Mar. 12 Tue.- Cloudy and rain; Worked in office all day invoicing goods etc.

Mar. 11, Mon.- Real nice weather. Had Dr. Frazer fit my new glasses this morning. Seen U.S. Morden 352 leave Portland. Dad and bessie came home with us.

Mar 10, Sun.- Real nice weather; We went up Vancouver in afternoon and stayed all night. Bob was away with Chuck Exner when we left.

Mar 9. Sat.-Cloudy and cool; Mr Weimacht was in a while. We went to see W C Felds show at Palace in Evening.

Mar 8, Fri.- Cloudy and cool: Worked in office all day. Irene was feeling a little better today. Bob went to the Palace show this evening.

Mar 7. Thu. - Cloudy and cool: We completed our New York shipment this a.m. Mr. Felt of U.S. warehouse was here again this afternoon.

Mar. 6, Wed.- Cloudy and cool worked in warehouse all day labeling up N>Y> orders. Irene was sick with bad cold.

Mar. 5, Tues.- Cloudy and Rains: Worked in warehouse this afternoon. Joe Hassler and I went out to North House (?) studub (illegible) meeting this evening.

Mar 4, Mon.- cloudy and cool: Worked in office all day. Had directors meeting this evening.

Mar 3, Sun - Cloudy and cooler: worked in office all day.

Mar 2, Sat - Nice weather: Mr. Wallach and I ate dinner at Hotel today and then I took him to Salem.

Mar 1, 1935 Fri.- Nice weather: Mr Wallach was here today about an augment for our new loan.

Feb 23 Nice weather: Mr. Potts and Bates from Colton called on me in morning. Seen Mr Weimachart at noon. 

Feb 22, Fri.- Cloudy and rains. Le Doux and I worked in warehouse getting out blackberry (type of berry is illegible). Irene, Jean, and I seen Mae West picture “Belle of the Nineties”. 

Feb 21, Thu. - Cloudy and light rains was busy in office most of the day.

Feb 20, Wed., Cloudy and some rain. Wiemachter and I called a Geo Smith at Stanton in afternoon. Irene and I seen the show “Happy News Ahead” at Gen. in evening.

Feb 19, Tues. - Nice weather . Worked in office all day.

Feb 18, Mon.- Nice weather: Went to Salem in afternoon called on George Paulus also called on Mr. Nibler at Woodbury.

Feb 17, Sun. Cloudy Took Peggy home and came home about 5:30 p.m. Bob went to show in evening and we stayed home. Went to Weimachts in evening.

Feb. 16, Sat.- Not much rain . worked in office all day. Went out to Weimachts in afternoon.
