March 1939 Gillette's in Mt. Angel

​March 31, 1939 Friday - Nice weather” I repaired front tire on car. and Bob came driving in before I finished with his Ford car from Los Angles as grandma and grandpa Hart stayed at Bob Harts. Bob and I went over to Gordons and Knaggs and they signed our road petition. Bob and I cut up a log and pulled over antoerh one with the donkey.

Mar 30th, Thursday - Nice weather: I split up the wood I had cut this morning.Took buttermilk jugs to Johnsons and they signed our road petition. This afternoon I pulled over another log and made a few cuts. Irene painted the front of the house a second coat and also started painting the windows red.

Mar 29th, Wed. - Very nice weather: I pulled over a log and cut wood all afternoon. Irene painted the front of the house and also worked up ground in front yard and planted some Kentucky grass seed.

Mar 28th, Tues. - Nice weather: Irene went with me to Mt. Angel to get the road petition papers from Mr. Harris. We visited Leona Predeck and seen their new baby boy. Also went to Silverton just before noon and mowed the grass at the cemetery. Came back via Mt. Angel and stopped at Mickels on way out of town. (note by Joyce that both Frank, Irene and their daughter Joyce are buried at the Silverton graveyard. At this time only their daughter was buried there as she died in 1931).

Mar 27th, Mon. - Nice weather sunshine all day but cool. Lindstrom and I cut 1,000 shakes on their place and packed them out on our backs. tok last load after supper and got through about dark.

Mar 26th, Sun.- Cloudy and a light mist. I piled some brush on the fire in the garden this morning. Us? it was not wet yet this morning.  Mr and Mrs. Harold Johnson visited us this afternoon.

Mar 25, Sat. - Cloudy and a little mist once in a while I cleared garden land and Jean and Verna built themselves a bon fire. Irene helped me cut up an alder in the garden. we took Verna Marks home about 4:30 p.m. Jean and I went to the store and bought a few groceries.

Mar. 24, Fri.- Very nice weather: I cleaned land all morning. This afternoon Irene and I went to Knaggs and helped them put down a congoleam rug in their kitchenn. Mrs. Holt their neighbor was there. Jean stayed at Mark’s for supper and went to the teachers operate. we went to Colton and brought Jean and Verna Marks home with us. Potts had to shut off his waterwheel on account of low water.

Mar 23, Thurs. - Nice weather: Lowered porch railing this morning. Cut alders and burnt them all afternoon in our garden. Changed winter underwear to light summer weight today.

Mar 22, Wed.- Nice weather: Lindstrom and I called on Mr. Harris at Mt. Angel also seen Bill Worley. (note this is not the Worley family that Joyce married into. However someone once told her that there were lots of Worleys living around Silverton). Mt. Angel water company refunded me my $5.00 deposit and I signed the check and turned it over to Mr. Harris for his payment of fee on the school work done for us last fall. Irene Jean and I went to Pott’s this evening. I put some condensers on their line but it did not stop only about 50% of the noise.

Mar 21, Tues.- Lindstrom and I finished cutting our 1,000 shakes this afternoon. We then cut out the side of the water wheel buckets but it did not increase the speed any. I called on Mr. Potts a little while this evening.

Mar 20th, Monday - Very nice weather: Lindstrom and I cut shakes all day. Irene washed all day.

Mar 19, Sunday -Bery nice weather: went over and got Mr. and Mrs Knaggs in the car. Martha brought over a chicken and we had a nice dinner. Mr. Knaggs and I visited Potts place and looked over the water wheel. Mr. and Mrs. Nick Mickle, Gilbert and Bobby visited us this afternoon. 

Mar 18, Sat.- Very nice weather: I installed Potts new relay and heater elements from him this morning. he had used the wheel all night and was well pleased with its output. clear garden this afternoon.

Mar 17, Friday Nice weather: Worked with Mrs. Potts all day testing out relay and power of their electric plants about 3p.m. he had his whole load turn don this water wheel. also went over to Knaggs and got some milk and eggs with the car.

Mar 16, Thu. - Car would not start until 10a.m. nice weather sunshine. Took Lindstrom to Portland with me as I went in to get Potts a relay. Got him a Cutler- Hammer Inc 110 volt relay. We called on Mr. Voight at the mill and he said he would not protest our new road. also called on Mr. Isaac and he said he thought Mrs Sherman would sign road petition.

Mar 15, Wed.- Nice weather but cloudy. I went to Potts place and he paid me $11.50 for work on the water wheel and flume. This afternoon I repaired planks on the plank road. and cut to cords of wood. and split it up. Irene baked bread.

Mar 14, Tue. Nice weather: I took buttermilk jugs to Johnson’s this morning. I worked about 3 hours on Potts water wheel and Ms Potts helped during the afternoon.

Mar 13, Mon. Stormy weather rain and sleet all day. i worked on Potts water wheel 8 hours. Leave worked about 3 hours and green nails worked about 7.5 hours. we tested out Potts water wheel and it pulled 1000 watts heater load very easy. Irene went to party at Stafferson’s place with Mrs. Bates.

Mar 12, Sun. Rained this morning early. I split up 5 cuts of wood and wheeled them in the wood shed. also put a different condenser in our old radio and hooked it up in the bunkhouse.

Mar. 11th, Sat. - I worked on potts flume and finished the grate and balanced the water wheel. It took 9 lbs. 8 hours. Lewis worked on flume nailing boards on cracked 5 hours 10 to 12 1:30 to 4:30 pm. Irene baked bread and did the rest of her ironing.

Mar 10, Fri.- Frosty this morning and it started to rain a little late this afternoon. Worked on Potts flume 8 hours . Lindstrom helped from 9:30 a.m. to 12 and 2pm to 5- 6.5 hours. Irene washed.

Mar 9, Thu. - Frosty early this morning . works don Potts flume 7 hours . Ed Windstorm help 6 hours. Joe Sprauer came in about 2 p.m. with a truck and took his 250 posts and paid me $22.50. I paid Lindstrom $11. 25 for his work on the posts.

Mar 8th Wed. - Nice weather:Worked on Potts flume 8 hours today with Reen Nails. Irene baked whole wheat bread and she also made one cut in 2 foot log. Mr. and Mr. Bates visited this evening.

Mar 7th, Tue. - Nice weather: I cut some wood and Potts came after me to work on the water wheel. I went down and checked the wheel over and got our 2 bottles of buttermilk at Johnson’s. Reen Nails and I worked 4 hours on Potts water flume.

Mar 6, Mon. - Sunshine all morning and it rained a couple of spells during the afternoon. I went to Johnsons to get the buttermilk but the truck did not bring it out today. This afternoon Irene helped me run the donkey and I pulled over a 2 foot log about 21 feet long and made several cuts off it this afternoon.

Mar 5, Sunday - Clear this morning with it coding up and turing to light rain by noon. I put up a small aerial out of the bunk house and tried to make our old radio play, but it did not work very well.

Mar 4, Saturday- Clear and cool: Made a crate out of cedar for the buttermilk bottles. Lindstrom had me take hm to Mollalla to get groceries and Mrs. Knaggs went with us to Mollalla. Mrs Knaggs and I bought our groceries from Davidson’s on way back.

Mar 3, Friday - Very light snow on the ground this morning. I cut up the rest of the log I had out by the garage. Split and wheeled it in the wood shed. Cut a piece off an old dig saw blade and tried to fix it in our old stove as a crate.

Mar 2, Thursday - Cloudy and showers of rain: I packed down 8 posts and cut up some wood and wheeled it in the wood shed. Checked up our posts and counted 250. This evening I wrote Joe Sprauer and advised him the posts were ready.

March 1, 1939 Wednesday - Cloudy and some rain; Lindstrom and I made several more more cuts to try and find some could “?” timber for posts. We got all our posts cut about 3:30 p.m. High wind and showers of rain during afternoon.
