This photo was taken in the spring of 2016 to show what the house looks like 65 years later after it was built in 1952. From the real estate site of Zillow.com it describes it as a two bedroom, one bath with 864 square feet.
xxx Larry Gillette marked on the map below where the Cedar Home Farm was situated (cabin) and then what they referred to as Elwood or the Strawberry ranch.
These Sanborn maps show a close in of my parents actual apartment complex and building and then a more distance map to show the location in a 1962 map. The red dot is at the corner of the block where their apartment was located. They were in one of the ends as there was 8 apartments in each building and their number was #8 according to the Polk's city directory for 1950.
From the Archives of the City of Portland. Built approximately in 1942 and overseen by the Housing Authority of Portland. These were photos taken while the buildings were being built or shortly thereafter. They were demolished sometime in the early 1960s. Joyce standing in front of residence at University Homes. Probably summer of 1951.
I had a couple pictures of my parents and other relatives standing outside the building where my parents lived. The background only showed the style of porch. I searched the archives of the Oregonian, the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, and the Oregon Historical Society. Finally at the Portland City Archives were photos uncovered. The archivists were very helpful. This photo was me with my parents and the only clue I had. Although I found the exact address in a Polk's city directory and found the old neighborhood call "University Homes".
Parents lived in neighborhood called University Homes at 3724 N Houghton, apt 8. My mother said it was originally built for Kaiser shipyard workers during WWII. Number 6 on the map below had 2,005 units. After the war and with the influx of veterans taking advantage of the GI Bill at the University of Portland, the university acted as a broker with the landlord to use the "barrack" style apartments for married student housing.
