1902 Joanna Murray Homestead patent in Bottineau

6/9/2017

Interesting as the land grant was given to Joanna Murray under her maiden name. The grant was under the auspices of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April 1820. Location is the Fourth West quarter of section 32 in Township one hundred and sixty one North of Range 77 west of the 5th Principal meridian in North Dakota containing 160 acres. The document was submitted for recording on May 2, 1902. However, this has the defecto signature by President William McKinley who was assassinated in September 1901.

Note that Joanna's name does not appear. She sold her parcel to her younger brother John Scott Murray. You can see that in the bottom left corner. The McArthur parcel is near the far upper right corner.

Ann McArthur Grant, Joanna Murray McArthur and Ann's son Joseph Vernon Grant

Ann's car is in the background with its rumble seat. She is standing here with her mother Joan or Joannah Murray McArthur and her son Joseph Vernon Grant. Vernon looks to be around 6 years old, so photo might have been taken in 1933. Ann would have been about 27 and her mother would have been aged 65 or 66.
